Requirements to Au Pair in Germany

To participate in the au pair program in Germany, applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Be between 18 and 26 years old
  • Have basic German language knowledge (A1 level) if coming from a non-EU country (not required for EU citizens)
  • Have previous childcare experience (e.g. babysitting, kindergarten, internships)
  • Hold a valid passport
  • Be in good health
  • Be willing to live with and support a German host family for 6 to 12 months

Costs Au Pairs Are Responsible For

  • Personal expenses
  • Any additional costs not specified as included

Important Information

  • Working hours are limited to 30 hours per week
  • The au pair role must not be treated as regular employment
  • An au pair can only receive a German au pair visa once
  • The program is strictly regulated as a cultural exchange
